Last week, attendees of Gen Con had the first chance to pick up Mage Wars Academy. It was a pretty surreal experience. I’ve been working on this project for quite some time now, so that fact that some players have it in their hands now, is pretty unreal. I remember looking over the first sheets of cards that Bryan made. There were some fantastic creatures there, and while several have changed greatly over the course of design, there were a few who remained mostly untouched. You’ve already seen the steelclaw family, so now it’s time to meet the Jade Gremlin.
And there you have our adorable agent of destruction. The Jade Gremlin is incredibly inexpensive at a mere four mana. He also has a meger five life. Normally this would make him incredibly fragile, however the Jade Gremlin has the ability to “teleport” away from melee attacks. As a Defense you can spend one mana to avoid a melee attack. In melee this makes the Jade Gremlin nearly unstoppable, as long as you can afford it.
Now, our little green friend is hardly unstoppable. First, he is a pest and so you can ignore him and focus on more important matters, such as the enemy Mage. With only two dice for attacks the Jade Gremlin is not terribly scary without enchantment buffs. Next, his ability is a Defense, and so any unavoidable will land on him. Also, he has no protection against ranged attacks, like most spells.
In the end, this new gremlin is a fantastic vessel for creature enchantments. Just beware of unavoidable and ranged attacks, and keep testing your skills!
